Argentina vs Algeria: World Champions Begin Title Defence Against Ambitious Desert Foxes

Defending world champions Argentina will kick off their FIFA World Cup campaign with high expectations as they take on Algeria in their Group J opener. Lionel Scaloni's side are aiming to achieve something only two nations in football history have managed before – successfully retaining the World Cup trophy.

Having lifted the title in Qatar four years ago, Argentina arrive in North America as one of the tournament favourites. The South American giants qualified comfortably, finishing top of the CONMEBOL standings and showcasing their quality throughout the campaign.

A memorable 4-1 victory over Brazil in Buenos Aires stood out as the highlight of qualification, while captain Lionel Messi once again proved his importance by finishing as the team's leading scorer. Argentina continued their impressive form in a series of international friendlies, winning seven consecutive matches while conceding only once.

The Albiceleste will also be encouraged by their excellent record against African opposition at the World Cup. Since a shock defeat to Cameroon in 1990, Argentina have won all six of their World Cup encounters against African nations. However, memories of their stunning opening-game defeat to Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup serve as a reminder that surprises can happen on football's biggest stage.

Algeria, meanwhile, return to the World Cup finals for the first time since 2014 and will be eager to make an impact. Ranked among Africa's strongest sides, the Desert Foxes secured qualification in impressive fashion by topping their CAF qualifying group and finishing among the continent's highest-scoring teams.

The North Africans have shown encouraging form under Vladimir Petkovic. Victories over the Netherlands and Bolivia, combined with a dominant 7-0 win against Guatemala earlier in the year, suggest they are capable of challenging stronger opponents. Algeria have also been defensively solid, conceding just two goals in their last six matches.

The two nations have met only once before, with Argentina claiming a thrilling 4-3 victory in a 2007 friendly at Camp Nou. On that occasion, Messi scored his first international brace, and the Argentine legend will once again be the focal point as he prepares to make yet another piece of history.

Messi is expected to make his 200th international appearance and become the first player ever to feature in six different World Cup tournaments. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has recovered from a finger injury and should start, while Nicolas Tagliafico remains unavailable due to a calf problem.

Algeria will be without defender Ramy Bensebaini, who continues to recover from an ankle injury. Much of their attacking threat is likely to come from Amine Gouiri, Mohammed Amoura and veteran captain Riyad Mahrez, whose experience could prove crucial in such a high-profile encounter.

While Algeria possess enough quality to make the contest competitive, Argentina's superior squad depth, tournament experience and world-class talent make them clear favourites. The reigning champions will expect to begin their title defence with a victory and set the tone for another deep run in the competition.

Prediction: Argentina 3-0 Algeria
