Ecuador vs Curacao Preview: World Cup 2026 Group Stage Clash
Ecuador will be aiming to bounce back from a disappointing opening defeat when they take on World Cup debutants Curacao in a crucial Group Stage encounter on Saturday night in Kansas.
La Tri entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup in outstanding form, having gone 19 matches unbeaten while keeping 13 clean sheets during that remarkable run. However, their impressive streak came to an abrupt end in the opening match as Ivory Coast secured a dramatic late victory courtesy of a decisive strike from Amad Diallo.
The defeat was Ecuador's first in two years and has left Sebastian Beccacece's side under pressure heading into their second group fixture. With Germany and Ivory Coast facing each other in the group's other match, Ecuador know that three points against Curacao would significantly improve their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
Although Ecuador remain favorites, they cannot afford to underestimate Curacao, who showed glimpses of promise despite suffering a heavy 7-1 defeat against Germany in their tournament opener.
For long periods of the first half, Curacao frustrated the four-time world champions and looked capable of reaching halftime level before Germany struck twice before the break and eventually ran away with the contest.
Dick Advocaat's side will now look to build on the positive aspects of that performance and cause an upset against one of South America's strongest teams.
Team News
Ecuador
Veteran captain Enner Valencia proved his fitness by starting and completing the full 90 minutes against Ivory Coast. The experienced striker remains Ecuador's biggest attacking threat and will once again lead the line.
Ecuador possess quality throughout the squad, with defenders Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho providing solidity at the back. In midfield, Moises Caicedo and teenage sensation Kendry Paez are expected to dictate play, while Gonzalo Plata and Jordy Caicedo offer attacking support.
After failing to score in their opening match, Ecuador will be determined to produce a more clinical display in front of goal.
Curacao
Curacao emerged from their defeat to Germany without any major injury concerns, giving experienced coach Dick Advocaat a full squad to select from.
Livano Comenencia made history by scoring Curacao's first-ever World Cup goal and is expected to retain his place in midfield. The attacking burden will largely fall on captain Leandro Bacuna and Juninho Bacuna, who are among the nation's most prolific international goalscorers.
Former Manchester United winger Tahith Chong is also expected to play a key role in attack, while Brandley Kuwas remains an option either from the start or off the bench.
Key Battle
The midfield duel between Moises Caicedo and the Bacuna brothers could prove decisive. Ecuador's ability to dominate possession and control the tempo should create opportunities against a Curacao side likely to sit deep and defend in numbers.
Prediction
Curacao deserve credit for their spirited display against Germany, but Ecuador possess significantly more quality across the pitch and should have enough firepower to secure their first victory of the tournament.
Expect Ecuador to control possession, create numerous chances, and eventually wear down the World Cup newcomers.
Prediction: Ecuador 3-0 Curacao
